Med-1 Consolidation

Heggeness, Sweet, Simington & Patrico, A P. C. is serving as lead counsel in the WCAB consolidation in Stockton relating to Med-1 Medical Center and Unique Healthcare Management, owned and controlled by Wilmer D. Origel, D.C. The case involves an elaborate enterprise based in Modesto that victimized primarily Hispanic injured workers for the purpose of obtaining millions of dollars of workers’ compensation benefits through an allegedly unlicensed medical corporation called Med-1 generating medical bills for services that were allegedly unnecessary, illegal, and often never provided.  Frequently, Med-1 chiropractors would provide manipulations under anesthesia at Sierra Hills Surgery Center also owned by Origel.

Med-1 was managed by Unique, which was owned by Origel.  Robin Barney and Rebecca Benedict assisted Origel in the management and control of Med-1, Unique and Sierra Hills.  Origel, Barney and Benedict would prepare and file allegedly fraudulent bills and liens in the name of Med-1 with the WCAB, primarily at the Stockton District Office. 

On January 6, 2005, Origel, Barney and Benedict were arrested and subsequently arraigned on a 29 count felony complaint filed by the San Joaquin County District Attorney.  Following a seven week preliminary hearing, Origel, Barney and Benedict were bound over for a criminal trial now scheduled for August 2008.  Barney and Benedict have entered guilty pleas.
